Just a Few IFM 2013 Annual Conference Take Aways:
All the presenters agreed that calorie restriction and moderate exercise are the best way to increase mitochondrial biogenesis and function! Fast for 12 to 16 hours minimum daily!
I just loved Dr. David Perlmutter’s presentation. I could have listened to him all day. Just a few notes from his talk:
Most chronic diseases, including ALZ, Parkinson’s, and heart disease are downstream effects of damaged mitochondria. Take care of the mitochondrial DNA! The brain, heart, and muscle are extremely mitochondrial dense. (I love the DFH Mitochondrial NRG and MitoPQQ for supporting mitochondrial function).
Cortisol affect hippocampal volume. Hippocampal volume significantly decreases with diabetes. Check insulin levels: powerful predictor for cognitive decline. Always check HbA1c. Increased HbA1c will shrink brain. Ideal HbA1c = 4.4 to 5.2. Glycated protein carriers cannot get across the BBB to brain! (Best DFH product to address high glucose, insulin, and glycated proteins is Metabolic Synergy).
High total cholesterol in late life was associated with a reduced risk of dementia. Are any of your patients on statins?
Devra Lee Davis, PhD gave an eye opening presentation on EMFs and cell phone usage. As she stated more than once, it is the elephant in the room that no one wants to address. Too much money involved and everyone loves their iPhones!
Spending 50 minutes with a cell phone turned on against the ear increased glucose in the brain (diabetes of the brain). Always use a headset or speaker. Put cell phones on airplane mode for kids. Did you know that 1996 was the year when cell phone standards were last set in the U.S.! Not good! (Consider EMF Protect from DFH to help mitigate the effects of EMF when you are using your cell phones, laptops, iPads, etc.)
